ALAN RANKLE: MAJOR EXHIBITION BY LEADING LANDSCAPE ARTIST

Gallery Oldham is showing a major exhibition of work by Alan Rankle. The exhibition opens on 21 October and is on show until February 2007.

The exhibition is in two distinct sections. Landscapes for the Turning Earth: Paintings 1986 - 2006 is the first major retrospective of Alan’s paintings.
This latter theme is picked up in the second part of his exhibition at Gallery Oldham, multi-media installation On the Edge of Arcadia. Alan has drawn on paintings from the Gallery’s Art Collection, photographs and early film footage to explore Oldham’s industrial landscape and the dramatic changes it has gone through over the last century. He created On the Edge of Arcadia in collaboration with composer Colin Gibson, filmmaker Kent Barker, sculptor Tim Nathan and eminent writer and environmentalist Tom Burke CBE.

Olympus was a Russian Grand Prix stallion who arrived in England aged 13. He had already competed for Russia and he went on to compete for Britain. All who worked with him, riders or trainers, many international, were deeply touched by his big heart and willingness to give 100%. He was a tallelegant horse, light on his feet and extremely sensitive. Most of all, he liked to work and had an unusual appetite for the most difficult movements of the Grand Prix. Many top horses have come my way before and since, but Olympus was the most unusal with a slightly ethereal, slightly mad atmosphere about him. He lived with us until his death at 26, but to the end he possessed such energy and vitality that, although he was old, losing him was very hard. It was a great privilege to have known him.
